Truman Capote was an American author who was known for several reasons in addition to his writing career.  The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin fictionalizes his relationship with New York society.  Benjamin is the bestselling author of The Aviator’s Wife, a novel of Anne Murrow Lindberg’s life.  Capote is well known as the author of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood.  He also wrote many short stories for magazine publications.  The swans of this novel are several prominent “ladies who lunch” who spent large amounts of time with Truman.  Each one of them is imagined as having issues that Truman tried to help them overcome.  Generally, they were far wealthier than Truman, so there was a symbiotic relationship with Truman staying at their luxurious homes while he provided entertainment and excitement.  There was always a question of whether Truman would go too far.  When he finally did, his downfall was cataclysmic.  The novel delivers very detailed literary and societal history.  It may also encourage the reader to explore Capote’s work
